Like the heat pumps discussed in our section Hybrid Heating and Air, the geothermal heat pumps are reversible and provide heat in Winter and air conditioning in Summer.
The geothermal heat pump itself is powered by electricity, the soil or ground is the source for heating and cooling. That’s why geothermal systems are also called ground source systems. The heat needed in Winter is extracted, pumped, from the ground, and in Summer the excess heat removed from homes and buildings is pumped into the ground and absorbed there.
And geothermal heat pumps are the most efficient among the High Efficiency HVAC heat pumps.
