HOW DO EMERGENCY STANDBY GENERATORS WORK?

A standby power system needs to work fully automatic. When the utility power fails, the generator needs to come on and supply power automatically. And once utility power is restored the generator shall automatically turn off.

  • A generator sized to handle the planned load.
  • A transfer switch which includes required controller and its sensors
The controller watches for power loss, starts the generator, and sets the transfer switch.
When utility power is restored the reverse steps are initiated: transfer the circuits back to utility power, shut down the generator and watch for the next outage.
  • The distribution panel with emergency circuits
This separate distribution panel for the emergency circuits is not needed if the main distribution panel is a GenReady® Load Center with split panels.
